Tone Rules: Mid-Class Consonants

Mid-class consonants (ก จ ด ต บ ป อ) are the only class that uses all 4 tone marks. Default tone: mid tone for live syllables (ending in a vowel or sonorant), low tone for dead syllables (ending in a stop or short vowel). This is the foundation of the tone system.
