The most important concept for Thai tones: a "live" syllable ends in a long vowel or sonorant final (ง น ม ย ร ล ว) and a "dead" syllable ends in a stop final (ก/ข/ค, ด/ต/ท, บ/ป/พ) or a short vowel with no final. This distinction controls default tones. Review with examples from Phase 4.
